Star Wars Saturday morning cartoons from the 80’s

Star Wars Saturday morning cartoons from the 80’s: Droids and Ewoks

I am going to take you down memory lane to my childhood just after Return of The Jedi released and we realized that there might not be any more Star Wars movies.

For a kid growing up in the 80’s there was a ritual viewing day for cartoons that is no longer practiced. This ritual viewing day was Saturday mornings. During the mid 80’s Lucasfilm released two Star Wars animated cartoons for this Saturday morning viewing time to help keep Star Wars alive in the hearts and minds of the young fans. As young Star Wars fans at that time, like myself, we were excited to see further Star Wars adventures of our favorite droids and of the new Rebel Alliance allies, The Ewoks.

Star Wars: Droids animated series aired for one season and shares the adventures of R2-D2 and his translator and companion C-3PO sometime between Revenge of the Sith and when we see them in Star Wars Rebels working for Bail Organa.

Star Wars: Ewoks animated series aired for two seasons and shares the adventures of Wicket the Ewok before Princess Leia meets him in Return of the Jedi.

These two classic animated series aired on Saturday mornings between 9AM and 10:30AM on ABC from 1985 to 1986.

ABC classic promo spot includes Ewoks and Droids

Unfortunately, neither of these classic Star Wars animated series are available on video in their entirety. What is currently available to collect and watch are two DVDs released in 2004, which compiles a few episode arcs from each of the series into two feature length ‘movies’.

If you are interested in taking a look at each of these series, you there are a few copies available for sale via or eBay.
