Spector 1 to Spector 2, give me some good news …
Unfortunately for Hera, there’s trouble lurking above the Ghost and once again, Kanan must trust in the force that she’ll be able to handle the Empire on her own. As Hera and Chopper power down, they hold their position as the rest of the Ghost crew prepare for their own Imperial encounter.
Once again, Kanan is faced with the ghosts of his past and struggles to place the lives of his family in the hands of clones — trust is something earned.
In this episode, trust is the main focal point and even Rex recants his loyalty, his trust in his General; Anakin Skywalker. The moment is preciously reminiscent to how he once spoke to padawan Tano. As Ezra sits behind the guns of their makeshift sand-walker, Rex tells a short tale of the days of yore — the dark times, the clone wars, and how he had the upmost trust in the leadership of the Jedi. Kanan looks on with uncertainty as he contemplates the weight of Rex’s words, unsure and still hesitant to fully trust, to let it in.
All that must be put at the wayside as they undergo a ground attack by a trio of Imperial AT-AT’s, led by non other than, Sergeant Kallus.
This moment is filled with nods to the original trilogy, especially Star Wars: A New Hope. As Kanan stays inside the clones rickety contraption, using the force to sense their whereabouts, young Ezra is dispatched to man the guns outside and unprotected — spotted by Sabine and the force as his only ally.
It is here where he has a Luke moment, it’s the Death Star Trench all over again, but in a new way. Ezra is told to not use his eyes to see, but to feel it, sense the shot and then take it. He even removes his helmet, much like Luke turning off his navigator computer to his X-wing; a beautiful parallelism that adjoins continuity.
It isn’t long after that Kanan swallows his pride and heeds his apprentice’s words of wisdom, giving in a bit,in order to do right by other’s — it is the way of the Jedi. In doing so, he brings home an old friend to someone who has faith in trust beyond all else. And no, the ability to trust isn’t easy, but nothing worth trusting ever is.
