It all started in April at Celebration Anaheim when JJ Abrams and the rest of The Force Awakens gang revealed the second teaser trailer for this December’s blockbuster. We saw not one but two relics of the past (no old jokes please), Darth Vader’s crispy helmet and Anakin/Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber.
Since then we have seen several of the Marvel: Star Wars comics have very central storylines involving physical relics that revolve around the Force in one way or another. Shattered Empire issue 4 showed us Luke Skywalker taking back two Force sensitive trees that used to live at the Jedi Temple; that the Emperor had been keeping. Lando’s comic series had him infiltrating the Emperor’s yacht where he kept Sith artifacts. The Star Wars comic is in the middle of a storyline that sees Luke trapped on Nar Shaddaa, where a villianous Hutt has many relics and artifacts of the Jedi and from the Clone Wars. Not to mention lightsabers that don’t work anymore, because apparently they need to be maintained and no one is around who knows how to do it.
Combine all of this information with the shoddy and unstable looking lightsaber that JJ Abrams confirmed in an August issue of Entertainment Weekly that was built by Kylo Ren himself and this raises more questions than answers.
How important are these physical (can I say practical?) things? Does the Force reside in them? Yoda tells us in The Empire Strikes Back that the rocks surrounding them contain the Force. So perhaps these items that were once around very powerful Force users somehow contain more of the mystical energy? What could this be used for? Or is this all a misdirection, a red herring if you will?
Artifacts from the past, Harrison Ford, and Lucasfilm Ltd. On paper that sentence seems like an Indiana Jones movie. We are looking for your feedback as this will be our topic on Episode 103 of The Cantina Cast.
Do you like the idea of these physical artifacts playing a large part in the Star Wars stories and movies? Is the idea of power in the Force residing in these objects too much for even Star Wars or does it work?
