Star Wars: The Force Awakens
By Alan Dean Foster
Book Review
This is a non-spoiler or spoiler friendly ‘Book Review’ on the highly anticipated Star Wars sequel, The Force Awakens – audio version.
After watching The Force Awakens, my husband and I came away with more questions than answers. Therefore, it was no surprise that we purchased The Force Awakens novelization in audio format right after watching the film.
Pros:
The novelization does a good job of taking you into the thoughts and feelings of the characters, like Rey, Finn, Poe, Kylo Ren, Han and Leia, not shown on screen. In addition, answering some questions that were not readily available while watching the film, like how did Poe get back to The Resistence. I listened to the audiobook version, which included some sounds effects and classic John Williams music that made this feel to be more like the movie experience.
Cons:
Many of the answers to the questions us fans had after seeing The Force Awakens are not answered solely by this novelization, some are included in other tie-in books, like The Force Awakens Visual Dictionary by Pablo Hidalgo or may be revealed in Episodes VIII and IX. In addition, the pacing of this story, in novelization form, is slower than the movie.
Personally, if you are a Star Wars: The Force Awakens fan and want to know more about the characters and experience the scenes that were cut from the film, this novelization is for you. If you want a similar experience to the theatre, then the audiobook version is the format I would recommend. If you are hoping that this novelization will answer all of your questions coming out of the film, then you will be disappointed.
