From “Siege of Lothal” to “Twilight of the Apprentice,” Season Two of Star Wars Rebels not only deepened the overall mythology of Star Wars, but also added so many layers to the characters we’ve grown to love. While most people are trying to wrap their heads around the fate and future of Ahsoka, Kanan, and Ezra, the fact that Sabine will be a major character in Season Three has been escaping attention. Sabine, like everyone on the Ghost crew, has a very unique personality and background. Given Sabine’s very complex history as being a Mandalorian, former Imperial cadet, and former bounty hunter, Season Three is rich in possibilities for her character (both internally and externally). In this three part series, I’m going to explore possible interactions and interests Sabine may have going forward and from those, pulling out larger implications.
One of the most powerful images of the finale “Twilight of the Apprentice” is when Kanan, Ezra, and Chopper return to the rebel base on Atollon. The Ghost Crew comes to welcome their team members with feelings of both shock and dread. Then, from out of the back, Rex comes to see if Ahsoka has returned. It only takes one glance from Ezra to start to feel the heartbreak. Just imagine what someone like Rex has gone through: growing up a clone to be Captain of arguably the most important Jedi in The Clone Wars, witnessing Order 66 seeing his brothers turn evil and the Jedi slaughtered, and now trying to adapt to the new galaxy while rapidly aging. And now, Ahsoka is gone. Rex probably thinks she died. With his past in shambles, I imagine a very strong character like Rex will move forward and become even more committed to the Rebellion. And I think he might even take up a protégé or become close with Sabine to fill the hole that Ahsoka left.
I say Sabine because of all the connections they have. The Mandalorian-Clone connection is huge. One of the first that comes to mind is the kind of fighting style and mindset they have. They both use the trademark Jango Fett dual blaster pistol fighting style. I wouldn’t be surprised if Jango trained a young Rex on Kamino back in the day with the style itself probably being Mandalorian in origin. They also both come from a military background that values intense focus/determination and are able to think about Rebel missions on those terms. I also imagine the type of respect that would come from Sabine considering Rex has Jaig Eyes (a Mandalorian cultural symbol) painted on his trooper helmet. I just get this feeling that Sabine has a lot of respect for Rex and wants to learn as much as possible, while Rex would be much more willing to teach and mentor her in Season 3. Just seems like a perfect storm of events and connections that would bring the two together.
Thank you for reading! What do you think? Is it plausible for Rex and Sabine to have a closer relationship in the future?
