Character Moments: Captain Rex

Characters Moments: Captain Rex

Welcome to another article that focuses on: Star Wars Character Moments. These are defining moments within the Star Wars saga that shows a “point at which the essential nature or character of a person, group, etc., is revealed or identified.”

Today, this character moment will focus on Captain Rex.

Captain Rex: The Clone Wars

This character was first introduced in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated movie as the Republic Clone Trooper assigned to Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker. Although he is a clone of Jango Fett, like the rest of the Republic Clone Troopers, Captain Rex is unique among his brothers.  It is through the character moments within the Star Wars saga that reveal this uniqueness.  There are many moments within the Star Wars saga where the nature of Captain Rex is revealed…

TheCantinacast.net blogger Matthew Neve believes this moment can be found in season 4 of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars Animated series.

For me, it’s his leadership of the clone troopers during their time with the Basilisk, Pong Krell. Makes the hard decisions and does what is right. Great leadership in times of hardship.

Author and TheCantinaCast.net guest blogger Sean Moore believes that this character moment can be found in Season 2 of Star Wars Rebels

I actually just wrote about the clones in general, but for me a defining moment for Rex is right after Kanan’s heart-wrenching recollection of Order 66 and Depa’s murder via clones. You can tell that Rex is sympathetic, but he makes it very clear that he removed his inhibitor chip and had no part in the Jedi massacre. To me, this says that Rex is no one’s pawn. He might be a clone, but he is very much his own man (which Kanan begrudgingly comes to realize.) I bet not even the master schemer Sidious could have predicted one of his “tools” turning against him.

However, for me, neither of these moments fully reveals or identifies this character.

The one moment that reveals the true nature of Captain Rex’s character is during the Star Wars: The Clone Wars feature film. This is the moment when Ventress attempts to force Rex to call Anakin back to the temple on Teph using a mind trick.

This moment shows the following characteristics:

    a strong will
quick thinking, especailly during a stressful situation
    trust in others
a williness to put the mission and the lives of others before his own

Basically, this moment shows that Captain Rex may be a clone, but he is really a unique individual, and does not think, and react like the rest of his clone brothers.

Johnamarie Macias (https://thewookieegunner.com) agrees with me and mentioned the following:

Valiant and loyal, Rex is the ideal soldier and a leader among men. I remember the exact moment I fell in love with the character. It was during the Star Wars: The Clone Wars feature film and Asajj Ventress had used a mind trick on him to contact Skywalker. Knowing he couldn’t fully resist, he used Anakin’s first name to tip him off. That was such a brilliant move on his part and it made him stand out from the rest.

So what is your opinion?

Do you agree with me?

Is there another moment that you feel defines this character?
